Getting a Driver’s License

Applicants must hand in all the necessary documents in person at the local Road Transport Department or one of the Citizens’ Service Centres.

When issuing a driver’s license for the first time, applicants must provide:

  • The relevant application form (TOM 7B)
  • Two recent passport pictures
  • Identity Card
  •  Certificate of having passed the learner’s permit theory test

Notes:

  • In case the applicant already has a driver’s license, then the current license must be presented
  • Applicants who wish to issue a driver’s license for vehicles registered in the category Γ, Γ+Ε, Δ, Δ+Ε, the subcategory Γ1, Γ1+Ε, Δ1, Δ1+Ε or the special categories Ζ, Η, Θ, must provide a Health Certificate. The same goes for applicants who wish to use the driver’s license for category B vehicles in order to work as professional drivers, as well as for applicants who are over 70 or for applicants with a physical disability.

Getting a driver’s license is possible in the following cases:

1)    If you are 20 years old, you can apply for Category A2, given that you have had a Category A1 driver’s license for at least 2 years.

2)    If you are 22 years old, you can apply for Category A, given that you have had a Category A2 driver’s license for at least 2 years.

3)    In order to apply for Categories Γ1, Γ, Δ1, Δ, you need to have a driver’s license for Category B vehicles.

4)    In order to apply for Categories B+E, Γ1+E, Γ+E, Δ1+E, Δ+E, you need to have a driver’s license for Categories Β, Γ1, Γ, Δ1, Δ vehicles respectively.

5)    A driver’s license which is valid for Categories Γ1+Ε, Γ+Ε, Δ1+Ε, Δ+Ε is also valid for driving Category Β+Ε vehicles.

6)    A driver’s license which is valid for Category Γ+Ε, is also valid for driving Category Δ+Ε vehicles, provided that the holder has a Category Δ driver’s license.

7)    A driver’s license which is valid for Categories Α1, Α2, Α, is also valid for driving Category ΑΜ vehicles.

8)    A driver’s license which is valid for Category A2, is also valid for Category A1 and AM vehicles.

9)    A driver’s license which is valid for Category Α vehicles, is also valid for Categories A1, A2 and A. A driver’s license which is valid for Category B vehicles, is also valid for Category B1 whereas A driver’s license which is valid for Category Γ vehicles, is also valid for Category Γ1. In the same way, a driver’s license which is valid for Category Δ, is also valid for Category Δ1.

10)A driver’s license which is valid for Categories Γ+Ε or Δ+Ε, is also valid for Categories Γ1+Ε or Δ1+Ε.

11)  A driver’s license which is valid for Category Γ, is also valid for categories Β,Η, Θ, Ζ and Στ.

12) A driver’s license which is valid for Category Δ1, is also valid for categories Β and special category Στ.

13)A driver’s license which is valid for any of the above categories is also valid for special category IB vehicles.

 

Renewing a Driver License

All the relevant documents must be presented by the applicant himself at the local Road Transport Department or one of the Citizens’ Service Centres.

In order to renew a learner’s driver license, the applicant must provide:

  • The relevant application form (TOM 7B)
  • Two recent passport pictures
  • Identity Card
  • The previous driver’s license or the previous learner’s driver license

Notes:

  • Applicants who wish to renew their driver’s license and are over 70 or applicants who have a physical disability, must provide a Health Certificate along with the other certificates.
  • Applicants who wish to renew their learner’s driver license for vehicles registered in the category Γ, Γ+Ε, Δ, Δ+Ε, the subcategory Γ1, Γ1+Ε, Δ1, Δ1+Ε or the special categories Ζ, Η, Θ, must also provide a Health Certificate

The renewed driver’s license for people over 70 is only valid for only 3 years.

Issuing a driver’s license falls under the 2001 Driver’s License law.
